From the CTO: Why Hyperbolic is the Future of AI

A Peak Into Our “AI Rainforest”

As an AI researcher and developer, Hyperbolic’s mission to empower and protect the future of AI is very personal. That’s why our $12M Series A with Variant and Polychain Capital is particularly significant to me. It represents new opportunities to tackle long-standing issues my peers and I have faced: inaccessible compute resources, limited access to optimized open source models, and inefficient development workflows.

During my time as an AI Computer Science PhD researcher and in my role at Microsoft Research, I struggled with progressing my AI research due to limited access to GPU resources. I witnessed several of my colleagues suffer from this same limitation, causing them to stall or abandon their projects altogether.

Since starting to work with my co-founder Dr. Jasper Zhang on building Hyperbolic back in 2022, I have had the opportunity to work with a like-minded partner on solving the AI compute problem. My background in AI and distributed systems, together with his mathematical expertise to verify distributed node behavior, have come together to break down barriers for the brightest minds in AI to innovate and shape the field. 

We share a vision of building an open and accessible AI ecosystem—of the people, by the people, for the people—where AI infrastructure, services, and models are collectively governed, and benefit all, and we were lucky enough to find investors that believe in this same vision. You can think of Hyperbolic’s ecosystem of products and services as an “AI Rainforest” — an interconnected and regenerative ecosystem that provides fertile ground for AI innovation. Open and Accessible AI

Hyperbolic’s infrastructure is designed to be open and foster collaboration, transparency, and accessibility.

By "open," we mean:

  1. Open GPU Platform: Our platform allows everyone to contribute their GPU resources, whether from data centers, on-premises computers, or individual devices, making AI development accessible to all.

  2. Open Source Models: We believe that open source AI is the future. The rapid progress of open source models demonstrates their ability to rival and often surpass closed alternatives like GPT. We are committed to hosting and supporting these models as soon as they hit the market and by request from our community.

  3. Open Community: Transparency and community collaboration are at the core of our vision. By building in public, we aim to create maximum value and the best possible products for our users.

How We Break Down Barriers to Progress

To realize the vision of Hyperbolic’s AI Rainforest, our two core products provide the foundation:

Hyperbolic’s GPU Marketplace: A Global Person-to-Person GPU Network

  • Permissionless: Our network is open to all, allowing anyone with a GPU to contribute their resources. We have achieved this through developing Hyper-DOs—a distributed operating system that coordinates decentralized GPU resources to deliver to the AI community.

  • Verifiable: We ensure accurate GPU verification through our proprietary Proof of Sampling protocol, the new gold standard in decentralized compute verification. Our team is also dedicated to continuously monitoring uptime and availability to ensure the reliability of our network.

  • Effortless Renting: Renters can connect to GPUs with just one click, allowing them to be up and running in seconds, eliminating the complex and lengthy procurement process that often stalls innovation.

  • All-in-One Platform: In the future, developers will be able to deploy a wide range of AI services on our GPU network. For example, they can submit a training job, specifying the desired GPU type and quantity to seamlessly spin up their training tasks.

Hyperbolic’s Verfiable Inference Services: On-Demand Access to the Latest Open Source Models

  • Built on the GPU Network: Designed to leverage the power of our distributed GPU network, our Inference Services are able to support numerous users simultaneously.

  • Fast: We have achieved high throughput and low latency. For example, our proprietary optimization methods have led to a 145% increase in output token throughput for the Llama-3-8B model on an AMD MI250 chip compared to vLLM, a widely adopted serving framework for LLMs.

  • Heterogeneous: Our inference stack supports Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Apple GPUs, making it versatile across hardware and providing universal accessibility for developers.

  • Broad Model Coverage: We support the leading open source models, including Base models, and prioritize onboarding new ones by user request.

Where The Series A Will Take Us

This Series A enables us to grow Hyperbolic’s AI Rainforest ecosystem, ensuring it remains a vibrant ecosystem for builders. With these resources, we’ll expand our engineering team to enhance the infrastructure that powers the rainforest. At the same time, we’re scaling our GTM and business development teams to grow our user base and drive mass adoption within the AI community.

Looking to the future, we plan to use this round to incubate new projects that align with our vision for an open, accessible, and sustainable AI ecosystem. As we move forward, we remain committed to our core values of transparency, collaboration, and innovation.
